The “National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Quarterly Update: December 2020” has been released. It shows that Australia’s emissions in 2020 were 5% lower than in 2019, and 20.1% below the 2005 baseline level under the Paris Agreement. Electricity generation continues to be the largest contributor of emissions, followed by stationary energy, transport, agriculture, fugitive emissions, industrial processes and waste.

In the year to December 2020, emissions per person and the emissions intensity of the economy were at their lowest levels in 31 years. Emissions per person were 46.7% lower than 1990, while the emissions intensity of the economy was 66.1% lower than 1990. Australia’s emissions have declined 22.6% since their peak in the year to June 2007.

Emissions from electricity generation have reduced by 20.9% since its peak in 2009 as wind and solar generation has replaced coal-fired generation.
